Lena Kroeker (University of Bayreuth):
In Lesotho, with the third highest HIV prevalence worldwide, medication is available to prevent transmission of the virus from mother to child. However, health practitioners do not recognise the precarious social situation young mothers find themselves in. Young mothers depend on important tips, loving care, and support at home from experienced women, which are not easily combined with medical guidelines. Instead of presenting solely restrictive conditions I intend to discuss young women’s responses. My study suggests that young women have agency and are active and creative when navigating conflicting demands.
